Twelve-year-old James Neubauer (Trevor Morgan) is reluctantly spending the summer in Maine, riding his bike and trading jabs with his misfit Uncle Charlie (Ron Livingston). He is emotionally and physically estranged from his incredibly busy father (Ray Liotta) and resentful of his new stepmother (Catherine McCormack). One day, while out riding his bike, James crashes through the local crazy woman's fence. The woman, Maddy Bennett (Vanessa Redgrave), insists that he repair the damange. James slowly forms an unlikely bond with this offbeat, cantankerous neighbor. He finds the darkened corners of Maddy's spooky hilltop house oddly comforting and discovers the secret of why the town thinks she's crazy. Ultimately, the relationship transforms them both, allowing Maddy to find the closure necessary regarding her son's death and helping James face the tragic loss of his mother.
